For this project, I created a pattern collection containing a hero, secondary, and blender pattern. For my collection, ancient Greek mythology and the story of Persephone and Hades inspired me. Thus, my collection is titled “Persephone: Queen of the Underworld.” My patterns depict Persephone, goddess of spring, when she joins in marriage with Hades, god of the underworld. Primary elements include pomegranates, skulls, and Greek temple columns.

Hero Pattern:
At first, I illustrated two characters to represent Persephone and Hades in the center of the temple in my hero pattern. However, I made the change to a statue of Persephone based on feedback to better match the art style and create a design that worked with the resources and tools I currently have.
Secondary Pattern:
For my secondary pattern, I originally had this as the blender. However, with the scale of the skulls and pomegranates, I used this as my secondary pattern. The detail in the pomegranate seeds also matches the scale and needs of the secondary pattern.
Blender Pattern:
Finally, my blender pattern also went through many changes. At first, I didn’t have columns for either my secondary or blender patterns. However, I changed this because my secondary and blender patterns were originally very similar once I put them into Adobe Illustrator. So, I decided to take the columns, vines, and briars from the hero pattern to create my blender. There is a good amount of detail on the columns, but I didn’t necessarily want the viewer to prominently see the detail over and over again, rather more subtly.
Color Palette:
For my colors, I chose a green to bring in the spring element of Persephone, but I wanted the focus to be on her connection to Hades and the underworld. Thus, I included a deep red of a pomegranate, grey to represent the bones of the skull, and two neutral colors (tan and creme) to represent the Greek architecture and create a smooth background.
