I was assigned with an article from Christianity Today. My article was titled “Every Adoptee’s Worst Nightmare.” After reading this article, I created and developed an editorial illustration to visually represent a concept from the article.
Key Aspects from the Article:
South Korea had an issue with the cultural stigma against domestic adoption and single parenthood. This pushed South Korean adoption agencies to begin pushing single mothers into giving up their babies for profit, or steal the babies. This later discovered adoption fraud made many American adopted South Koreans question and grieve their birth families and identities.
Main Idea:
I pursued designing a concept piece from the idea of adoption agencies stealing babies from mothers in South Korea. A visual I really liked was a stork–commonly regarded in cultures as a “deliverer” of babies– with a robber mask, about to steal a baby.
